2003 Chicago Murders

This website is a companion to Illinois Murder Indictments 2000-2010, with focus on a database of 140 cases drawn from 2,200 death eligible murder indictments presented there. These 140 cases are all from Cook County, and the indictments date from the period January 1, 2003 - June 30, 2003. The data base consists of information for each case taken from two public sources: the official Circuit Court of Cook County indictment and the Circuit Court of Cook County Certified Statement of Conviction/Disposition.

It is accompanied by an essay reflecting on the character of one particular criminal law bureaucracy at one specific point in time.

Leigh Bienen's previous websites–permanently archived with Northwestern University Library and Pritzker School of Law–include Homicide in Chicago 1870-1930; The Life and Times of Florence Kelley in Chicago, 1891-1899; Illinois Murder Indictments 2000-2010; and Illinois Judges 2015.

The information presented in this web site was compiled over several years under the auspices of, and with the support of, the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law. Particular thanks to Kimberly A. Yuracko, Dean and the many who supported this project. Thanks also to former Deans David E. Van Zandt and Daniel B. Rodriguez, and former and present faculty and staff for their much appreciated assistance. Generations of law students, librarians, faculty assistants, and other staff have devoted their time, intelligence, and energy to this effort, for which I am deeply grateful. Any mistakes, errors, or omissions are mine alone. Special recognition must be given to Mark Swindle, web designer and source of inspiration for this and other projects. This web site would not be here, and available to all, without his unflagging dedication and artistry.
